HERMES: Technical details

 

Transmit and receiver image rejection > 110dB

Full duplex operation, any split over entire 160m to 6m range

Future expansion possible to eight independent receivers using the same antenna

500mW RF output on 160 – 6m amateur bands

Built-in high performance preamp, with a noise floor typically -135dBm in 500Hz

Software-selectable 31dB input attenuator in 1dB steps

High performance receiver – same specifications as the HPSDR Mercury receiver

(ie Blocking Dynamic Range typically about 125dB)

FPGA code can be updated via the Industry Standard TCP/IP network Ethernet

connection

Seven user-configurable open-collector outputs, independently selectable per

Hermes the latest HPSDR  digital all mode HF + 6 Mtr SDR transciever  prototype has been assembled by Abhi Arunoday (Consultant) ,Dept of Science and Technology, Govt of India, who has also designed the 8 layer PCB of the transciever. The performance is at par or exceeds top notch mega buck rigs.

Some usb-serial dongles have an integrated voltage converter and
output +/- 12 V on the lines. They also implement all the control
lines available on the nine pin connector. These work.

Some dongles dispense with this complexity and just provide 0-5 V.

The "Prolific" brand is said to work.

As for opening up the computer and fitting the header ... Opening up
works, it is the "putting it back together in working order" that is
the problem.

If you have a laptop/netbook with at least one free usb port and a
dongle this could be used for general use with your micro based boards
- just provide a serial in/out port in your project and you have a
full keyboard and display which costs nothing extra.

I have experimented with 16F628 and home brewed pic programmers. I will go with OM S Chandra Sekhar. It is easy to homebrew a serial port programmer.

 

I have attached a rar file herewith – content this is my entire “PIC programmer folder”. I have homebrewed this one successfully and is working with 628, 876, F84 and many other PICs.

 

Modern PC’s have dispensed with Serial Port as well as Parallel port. In my experience, the USB to Serial port don’t work well at all in many cases. However, you can find “hidden” serial port in many modern PC mother boards. It is usually called “serial port header”. You can connect a “serial port header to 9 pin or 25 pin converter” cable and still do all the good things. I have attached a pic of one such adapter. You can home brew this one also!

Yes used zener protection between SOURCE and DRAIN even on gate.

Yes used resistor in series with capacitor for negative feedback in between the GATE and SOURCE for stablization.

Also used  lowpassfilter/ PI network before gate.

But My experience is real bad using LDMOS which is in Video,
Personal experience, LDMOS cannot be used in SSB or AM, , baising them for linearity results in smoke and shortcircuit. LDMOS is only for FM & CW working.

Better turned to RDMOS.

An IRF510/511 with a TWISTED & HARD wired resistor between the GATE and SOURCE to make sure it never comes off when over heated till solder melting point.. helps.

A zener type protection between SOURCE and DRAIN will help too..

Anyone tried these?

I really like the java calculators and I know that there are a few out there.  One that comes to mind is K7MEMs Electronic Notebook @ http://www.k7mem.com
For a stand alone calculator (no internet connection required) I use HamCalc by VE3ERP for many of my antenna projects.  The program has calculators for coils, antennas, matching networks, filters, and much more.  It is a dos program but will run in dosbox under both windows and linux.

The calculator works, I just have no way of scrolling the entire picture to see all of the text unless I switch to rendering in IE from firefox 5
