There is nothing to beat the simplicity of a 555 timer chip for this application. Someone asked me why the gadgets lasted so long in the old times, I wanted to tell the gentleman that there were no IT or any other madly paying jobs like today in those days, however I told him that it was all due to the absence of micro controllers that they lasted so long...
